The Road of Creative Excess, by jim leftwich

The Road of Creative Excess Leads to the Palace of Creative Wisdom

Dmitry Prigov

From Art Margins, 1999

Dmitry Prigov is one Moscow Conceptualist artist who has succeeded in creating an artistic universe of his own, or rather, an artistic all-encompassing mythology. His output alone is monstrous: He has already completed 20,000 poems and is planning to reach 24,000 by the end of the year. He has written prose, plays, and theory; worked as a performing and recording artist; produced drawings, sculptures, objects and installations. This massive output testifies to his obsession to fill the void around him with texts.

from a 1996 interview

Philip Metres: Have you any other new heroes emerging in your work?

Dmitry Prigov: You know, the thing is that no great myth exists now in which a hero could appear. I have written other discourses-the liberal-democratic, the national-patriotic, the contemporary homosexual, the mass metaphysical—these are big discourses—but it’s not necessary to write about heroes. One could just describe a kind of writing. Then there’s the very complex problem of self-presentation-as poet not existing in quantity of poems but as “manipulator.” I have a big project which is about images—I have to write 2,000 poems per year, 24,000 poems overall. It’s also a project that is a type of poetic conduct, more than anything. So I don’t have any problem finding material—some people just don’t understand the structure of this work.

The Calder Foundation’s online research archive, which as Hyperallergic’s Valentina Di Liscia reports includes “over 1,300 Calder works across different media.”

But wait, there’s more: the archive also offers “1,000 photographs and archival documents,” “48 historic and recent texts by the artist, his contemporaries, and present-day scholars,” and “over 40 microsites exploring Calder’s exhibition history.” (This in addition to the Calder Foundation’s Vimeo channel.)

Jim Brodey

Nick Sturm:

Jim Brodey remains sidelined in scholarship on the New York School. His books are out of print and hard to find, although among the poets who knew him his work is tremendously important.

Description by William Matthews, bookseller (2023)

In the original envelope, postmarked 22 Jan 1973, addressed to Tom Clark in Bolinas, Ca.; "Brodey" written on the back of the envelope. Three poems on individual pages, twice folded, one signed in holograph, the other two with "Jim Brodey" typed. These have been reproduced by mimeograph or hectograph, and are very faded and difficult to read, but still legible. Brodey and Clark were associated, co-editing The Bolinas Hit in 1969. Brodey died in 1993.

Though Brodey increasingly drifted away from the poetry community in the 1980s, he continued to write ceaselessly, sometimes composing up to 30 poems a day.

from an interview with !5 Questions

How important are practicing and instrumental technique for achieving your musical goals?

I don’t practice. I only play. In the 1990s, I used to play and record something every day. These days the guitar rarely comes out of the bag between shows, but I’m still playing all the time. My whole life is music. Everything I do is music.

I have a great love for the physical. I don’t reach for the spiritual – if I reached for that, I wouldn’t get anywhere. I don’t know what spiritual means. But once you understand the physical, everything else falls in place. The notes are physical, the instrument is physical, the eardrums are physical, the motions are physical, the soul is physical. We live in a physical world.  Music has to have blood in it.
